Permanent Infrastructure for Permanent War

Prior to last month, I never had heard of the CIA’s Project Artichoke, Dr. Frank Olson, or his role in the CIA’s development of chemical weapons of mass destruction during the 1950′s. Of course, I was born during that era. So, researching the history of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and connecting the dots to the Iraq War intrigues me. In addition to reading Bob Woodward’s “VEIL: The Secret Wars of the CIA” and “Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty” by Russ Baker, this documentary, “Code Name: Artichoke – Conspiracy Documentary”, is among several [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlJesg9lR7I] films I recommend for high school [and college] history students to peruse for a better understanding of our “war games”. Beyond already knowing that Pres. H.W. Bush was Director of the CIA prior to becoming Commander in Chief, the most intriguing discovery for me was that both Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld played important roles in US international policy decades prior to the election of George W. Bush in 2000. In retrospect, now I better understand why the Supreme Court mandated the son’s victory over Al Gore. Prophetically, MIT’s Noam Chomsky has authored more than 100 books, many of which deal with our nation’s imperial hubris and hegemony. If history repeats itself, then what can we learn about Machiavelli’s “The Prince” from this father and son who sent troops to the Middle East “to protect our freedom” here in the United States? Explain.
